From 2009 to 2013 I photographed along the northeast border of New Jersey called the Meadowlands. The Meadowlands are officially “protected” by government agencies and private corporations, resulting in most areas existing under constant surveillance.
Marshlands, residential property, industrial development, an enormous sports complex, landfills, factories and the ecosystems along the Hackensack River co-exist within this area, producing visual and logistical friction. The images in this ongoing series represent scenes of collision between larger entities and smaller, subtler divisions of space.
All of the photographs deal with boundaries between unlike elements. The power between the structures and elements in the frame shifts, however, my aim is to keep the viewer off balance. The title of this project refers to concrete materials which support the idea of a border unseen, but nevertheless implacable.
